National Mental Health Safety Improvement Programme (NMHSIP)

Programme overview

The Oxford Patient Safety Collaborative is working with the National Patient Safety Improvement Programme (NMHSIP) to deliver a range of improvements in mental health. This national programme has three ambitions:

  1. Reduce the incidence of restrictive practice in inpatient mental health and learning disability services by 50% by March 2024 (building on the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health – NCCMH – collaborative on restrictive practice).
  2. Reduce suicide and deliberate self-harm in inpatient mental health services, the healthcare workforce and non-mental health acute settings.
  3. Improve the sexual safety of patients and staff on inpatient mental health units by 50% above baseline by March 2024.

Programme partners

Alongside NHS mental health trusts in our region, we are working closely with NHS England / Improvement and the NCCMH which has been working with mental health trusts to gather evidence via collaborative pilot projects and working with the wider resources of the Royal Collage of Psychiatrists. They will produce materials and ‘change packages’ to support trusts with each of the programme’s three ambitions outlined above. We will support the adoption and spread of interventions and innovation.

We are also one of five AHSNs which have come together in the South of England Mental Health Quality and Patient Safety Improvement Collaborative which is led and delivered by a faculty of committed mental health professionals in partnership with the AHSNs.

All of this shared learning, expertise, access to clinical leadership and resources will be focused on making care safer while improving the quality of mental healthcare.
