Piloting additional support alongside talking therapy

The outcomes of psychological therapies (IAPT services) for anxiety and depression vary across individuals and symptom domains. Being able to predict treatment response from readily available patient data at presentation has potentially important benefits in aiding decisions about the most suitable interventions for an individual patient.

Using latent profile analysis of a number of London IAPT services, it became clear that a specific cohort of patients have not historically done well with IAPT treatments. This ‘latent profile 7’ group of patients share certain characteristics including high phobia scores and drawing benefits. They do not move to recovery and suffer recurring episodes of depression/anxiety.

We plan to gather data in the Oxford AHSN region and ensure patient profiles are similar to the London ones, explore potential causes and what additional support may be offered to better serve this patient group.

All IAPT services in our region are piloting a number of additional support offerings during treatment such as employment support and wellbeing support with this cohort of patients. Data is collected on outcomes and it is anticipated that we will be able to examine a combined data set in October 2022.
