Important paper published on paediatric long-term ventilation incidents in the community

One of the priorities of the Specialised Paediatric programme run by the Oxford Patient Safety Collaborative was to investigate incidents in the community involving children who use long-term ventilation.

The findings of this important work have now been published in the BMJ’s ‘Archives of Diseases in Childhood’. Read the paper here.

This research was also picked up in an article in the Independent: ‘Safety fears for hundreds of ‘hidden’ children on ventilators’

This is the first time that this data held by the National Reporting and Learning System has been analysed in this way. This work built on the Specialised Paediatric programme’s analysis and publication of a similar report into children living in the community with gastrostomies which was published by the BMJ earlier in 2019. That research paper can be found here.

The Specialised Paediatric programme closed in 2019. Its archive can be accessed here.
