Online training programme for midwives shortlisted for three national patient safety awards

An e-learning programme aimed at maternity services is a finalist in three categories of the HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

The Intelligent Intermittent Auscultation in Labour training is primarily for midwives in clinical practice and student midwives in training. The programme is unique because it uses ‘real’ fetal heart sounds to help improve the key midwifery skill of auscultation.

It is very important that all midwives complete this training because it gives them an opportunity to practice this skill to improve accuracy and make sure that the plans they are making during labour for mothers and babies are appropriate.

The training will help midwives who are caring for low risk women in labour to identify babies who are not coping with labour and ensure appropriate escalation for closer monitoring.

Completion of this training enables maternity services to identify midwives who require additional training and support and ultimately improves safety for mothers and babies.
