Medicines safety

The Medicines Safety Improvement Programme [MSIP] forms one of the core elements of the NHS Patient Safety Strategy.  It aims to reduce medication related harm in the NHS, focusing on high risk drugs, situations and vulnerable patients.
Some of the MSIP component workstreams come under the AHSN National Programmes, i.e. PINCER, which supports pharmacists and GPs to identify patients at risk from their medication and act appropriately, and TCAM, which helps patients who need extra support in taking prescribed medicines when they leave hospital.

In addition to these projects the PSCs have a workstream focused on reducing harm as a result of errors in the administration of medicines in care homes as an estimated 92 million of these occur each year. This three year project is currently at an early stage, more information will be added here as the workstream develops.
