Medicines safety

The Medicines Safety Improvement Programme (MSIP) forms one of the core elements of the NHS Patient Safety Strategy. It aims to reduce harm related to medication in the NHS, focusing on high risk drugs, situations and vulnerable patients.

Some of the MSIP component workstreams come under the AHSNs’ national programmes. These include PINCER, which supports pharmacists and GPs to identify patients at risk from their medication, and TCAM, which helps patients who need extra support in taking prescribed medicines when they leave hospital.

In addition, the Patient Safety Collaboratives have a workstream focused on reducing harm as a result of errors in the administration of medicines in care homes – an estimated 92 million occur each year. This three-year project is at an early stage.
